The Story Behind Hoop Dreams
My name is Kelly Darragh and I am the boys varsity basketball coach at Billings West High. My wife, Rachelle and I, have two boys Dennehy & Eamon. Dennehy, our 10 year old son, is autistic. Each summer we put on our West High basketball camp. As parents it has been a joy to see our youngest son take part and a heartache that our eldest son is overwhelmed by the camps activities. We’ve also found it difficult to find many things that he can participate in due to his sensory issues. We often feel lost, helpless, and frustrated when it comes to opportunities for Dennehy to be involved in. We believe that we are not alone in these feelings. Many families in our community are dealing with the challenges special needs bring. We wanted to create a camp where our son and other children with special needs could have fun and have a place where they all belong. We have created Hoop Dreams Basketball Camp to be an all inclusive camp for kids with special needs. The goal of this camp is to offer a safe place where kids can feel welcome and empowered on the court. We want every child in our community to have an opportunity to participate in a fun camp tailored to their needs. This camp is open to all special needs boys and girls ages 1st-12th grades. Hoop Dreams is a non-profit organization and all coaches are unpaid volunteers. We are completely supported by the gracious donations from businesses and community members. This also allows us to let all athletes attend; free of charge. All donations go towards the cost of the athlete's shirts, basketballs, travel for volunteers, and the insurance for the gym.
